Please let it be recorded that the bird commonly known as ‘Peter’s Peacock’ is, in fact, an uninvited guest who appeared in the garden of ‘The Salt Box’ towards the end of last year. He clearly found the surroundings to his liking and stayed.
He acquired the name ‘Percy’ and was, at first, very quiet and undemonstrative, contenting himself with exploring the garden and field, and displaying, in vain, to Sara’s chickens and any other feathered creature that ventured into the garden. However, like many uninvited guests, he became rather noisy and intrusive, particularly when trying to attract members of the opposite sex with his forlorn cries so, mindful of our neighbours’ quality of life, Sara and I decided to get him some female company and, in due course, a lady peahen, ‘Penny’, arrived.
Penny earned the nickname ‘Houdini’ as the planned 3 week period of her confinement in our old stock trailer to get her acclimatised to her new home was curtailed during her first evening when she managed to escape through an opening in the extreme top corner of the back of the trailer that could not have been more than a third the size of her body. However, she appeared in the garden with Percy the next day, proving herself to be a lady of some moral fortitude by resisting his requests to ‘go all the way’ on their first date. While Percy spent most of the day in stunning and frantic display mode, complete with raised tail and rustling feathers, she was content to pick her feet and re-arrange her plumage; rather like some women I have known in the past!
The following day Penny did not show up and Percy has since been alone once again, somewhat quieter than before with the exception of some rather anguished cries in reply to those of other birds and animals that he hears.
We are not expecting to be able to recapture Penny and bring her back, but we would be grateful to hear of any sightings of an Indian Blue Peahen (mainly greyish plumage with slightly iridescent greeny-blue neck), and to know that she is still alive and well.

Kate Platt of Hillview, Brilley, says:
"Clyro primary school, which currently has 8 Brilley children attending (due to rise to 11 in September), is under serious threat of closure by Powys County Council.
The school is thriving, popular and successful but that doesn't seem to count for a lot. But!! we are fighting back, with, amongst other things, a letter campaign and paper and e-petitions. If you would like to sign the petition, click here.
You can also leave your comments at this email address and we can also be found on facebook.
Thank you in anticipation."

The P.C.C. would like to thank everyone for their help in making the Bank Holiday weekend events so successful. The exhibition in the church was stunning, and our grateful thanks go to Dilys and Fiona for their months of hard work. In the hall, we were inundated with helpers who did a wonderful job manning stalls and providing all day refreshments, ably directed by Rose. We could not have done it without you all. Many commented on the nice friendly atmosphere which was an added pleasure. It looks as though we have made over £3,000 for the two churches, a great help when repairs are so costly. Well done everyone, and thank you once again.
